Beer Review - Weston Brewing Rip Van Winkle

Brewery: Weston Brewing
Location: Weston, MO
Beer Name: Rip Van Winkle
Style: Bock
ABV: 8.0%
IBU: NA

The beer was poured from a 22oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours a coppery amber with a decent slightly off-white head and moderate amounts of lacing. The aroma speaks of deep caramel malts, sweet toffee, toasted nuts with hints of bubblegum and banana. The flavor is sweet and bready, with lots of toffee and caramel, some mild banana esters and dark fruits. Ends slightly spicy with some woody hop bitterness. A nice medium body beer with very slight carbonation.

Overall a very average Bock style beer. I really like the old timey label. A lot of sweetness from the malts overwhelms this beer. Perhaps needs a bit more hop bitterness to balance. There seems to be a slight butterscotch/diacetyl aspect to the beer. There is nice gentle warmth from the alcohol level that is very well hidden amongst the flavors. An interesting fact, the brewery claims this is an interpretation of an originally brewed beer from the early 1900’s that was dubbed “The Richest Bottle of Beer in the World.”
