Beer Review - Samuel Adams Longshot Derf's Secret Alt

Brewery: Samuel Adams
Location: Boston,  MA
Beer Name: Longshot Derf’s Secret Alt
Style: Altbier
ABV: 9.3%
IBU: NA

The beer was poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours a deep mahogany with ruby highlights. Produces a thick tan head with good retention and sticky lacing. The aroma hearkens of sweet caramel malts, chocolate, a faint hint of banana with a bit of alcohol on the edge. The flavor is dominated by sweet burnt caramel malt with a quick dash of orange peel, herbal hop bitterness, and a little alcohol heat. This is a smooth medium body beer that is well carbonated.

Overall a good Alt Beer. Not a style you see often on the beer store shelves. I really like the malt profile. The sweetness of the malts are nicely balanced with just a touch of hop bitterness that makes this beer not too cloyingly sweet. For a good amount of alcohol in this beer it is surprisingly complementary to the sweetness. Nicely Carbonated. What a great program by Samuel Adams to give a three homebrewers every year a shot on the national stage.
